Dr. Haltom here, providing common sense decision-making for everyday life through scientific research—from original scientific studies, official medical/government websites, and my personal experiments.

The purpose of this blog is to demystify how knowledge is generated in the life science space, through the lens of Dr. Haltom’s decade-long career in developmental, genetic, and oncology research. Other fields, such as engineering and technology, may have different methods for disseminating research and generated knowledge. After reading this blog, Dr. Haltom’s hope is that non-scientists will be able to find the answers to their health and science-related questions in the original scientific studies, the most trustworthy of sources.

Everyone. Regardless of education or background, you can make decisions like a scientist. Everyone searches for answers online or through friends and family, but the sources and results may not provide trustworthy, proven, or accurate scientific information. Here you’ll find and be able to interpret proven evidence to help make the best choices regarding health and well-being—including remedies for diseases like cancer and lupus, and tips for overall healthy living.

Let’s demystify how scientific knowledge is created and shared through an unbiased, nonpartisan, objective, and fact-based synthesis of multiple scholarly sources, peer-reviewed studies, government, medical, and academic institutions—all broken down into easy-to-understand points.

About Dr. Haltom

Dr. Haltom received her PhD in 2015 from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, where she studied genetics and development of the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) eye. She then went on to complete her postdoctoral fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, where she studied brain tumors (glioblastoma and medulloblastoma) in mice. Once her fellowship was completed, she secured a Scientist position at the biotech company Atreca in San Carlos, California, developing antibody therapeutics for cancer.

While most of her disease-related experience is in the field of cancer, the scientific training applies to all disciplines. Dr. Haltom is well-trained and confident to lead readers on their journeys to find scientific information and validate scientific claims on their own!
